Arouca 516 Suspension Bridge: One of the Longest in the World

The Arouca Suspension Bridge is an engineering masterpiece and one of the longest pedestrian suspension bridges in the world. It stretches 516 meters (1,692 feet) across the Paiva River and hangs 175 meters (574 feet) above the gorge.

As you step onto the bridge, you’ll be rewarded with jaw-dropping views of waterfalls, cliffs, and the rushing river below. The bridge connects the Aguieiras Waterfall and the Paiva Gorge, offering panoramic views of the whole valley that will take your breath away (literally and figuratively!).

Despite the dizzying height, it’s completely safe, designed with strong steel cables and a secure walkway that gently sways with each step, adding to the thrill. It requires a timed ticket to cross, making sure that they never reach the passenger capacity.

The Paiva Walkways: A Scenic Hike Through Portugal’s Natural Beauty

The Paiva Walkways are an 8.7-kilometer (5.4-mile) wooden boardwalk trail that winds along the Paiva River along the Paiva Gorge, through lush forests, next to crystal-clear waters, and along dramatic cliffs. The route showcases some of Portugal’s most pristine landscapes and geological wonders, making it a highlight for anyone exploring the country’s natural side.

As you walk, you’ll discover Aguieiras Waterfall, Vau River Beach, and the Gola do Salto, a natural whirlpool carved by centuries of flowing water. The trail includes many staircases and some inclines, so wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring water. The views make every step worthwhile.

The walk can be done in either direction between Areinho and Espiunca, and in the high season there are sometimes shuttles available to bring you back to your starting point.

How to Visit from Porto

Visiting the Arouca Suspension Bridge and Paiva Walkways is easy as a day trip from Porto. The drive takes around 1.5 hours each way, passing through scenic countryside and charming villages. Renting a car gives you flexibility to explore at your own pace, but you can also join a guided small-group tour that includes transportation and entry tickets. This is sometimes easier as you don’t have to coordinate getting back to your car.

Access to both the bridge and the walkways is limited each day, so it’s essential to book tickets in advance through the official website. You can choose between tickets for just the Paiva Walkways or a combination ticket that includes both attractions. Access to the bridge requires a timed entrance ticket, so plan your day carefully to make sure you arrive on time.

The Arouca 516 Bridge and Paiva Walkways offer a side of Portugal that most travelers never see: wild, untouched, and incredibly beautiful. Whether you’re chasing adventure or simply want to reconnect with nature, this is one of the best things to do near Porto.
