Top 5 Romantic Spots in the Atlantic Islands
Valentine’s Day is approaching and romance may be on your mind. With breathtaking views, charming towns to explore, beaches to stroll, and delicious food, the Atlantic Islands offer the perfect backdrop for quality time with someone special. And while seeing these destinations in person is not yet possible, no one says you can’t spend some time dreaming about these romantic spots and making plans for the future.
1. Cabo Girão Skywalk - Madeira
The Portuguese island of Madeira offers some rough and beautiful volcanic terrain. Cabo Girão is a towering sea cliff on the southern coast of the island. Its glass skywalk is the highest of its kind in Europe and offers incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean, as well as the ability to look straight down to the base of the cliff. While not for the faint of heart, a visit to the Cabo Girão skywalk will certainly be memorable and you’re sure to get that perfect photo.
2. Mt. Teide - Tenerife, The Canary Islands
On the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands you will find Mt. Teide, the highest point in Spain. It is the fourth largest volcano in the world and is located in Las Cañadas National Park. This park is characterized by its unique, lunar landscape and beautiful plant life. With its elevation of over 12,000 feet and the low level of artificial light in the area, the summit of Mt. Teide is known as one of the best places in the world for stargazing, and certainly the most accessible. Enjoy a beautiful sunset overlooking the other Canary Islands, then admire the night sky like you have never seen it before. Nothing says romance better than a starry, starry night.
3. Salto do Prego Waterfall - São Miguel Island, The Azores
You’ll find the Azores archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, just over 900 miles west of the Portuguese coastline. And in the southeast part of the largest island of São Miguel, you will find the parish of Faial da Terra and the Salto do Prego trail. Hiking the trail will take you to the beautiful Salto do Prego waterfall, where you can swim in the refreshing water and take an adorable selfie in front of the crystalline falls. What better way to spend time together than enjoying some fresh air, beautiful natural landscapes, and swimming in a waterfall?
4. Monte Brasil - Terceira Island, The Azores
On the Azorean island of Terceira, within walking distance from the capital city of Angra do Heroísmo, you’ll find Monte Brasil, the remnants of a tuff crater that overlooks the city. Monte Brasil is flanked by two bays and was used as a defensive point during the military history of Angra, resulting in the construction of various forts, including the Fortress of São João Baptista. Hiking to the top will give you sweeping views of the Atlantic, the city of Angra, and portions of Terceira beyond. Stand on this viewpoint with your loved one and breathe in the fresh sea air. You will truly feel ‘on top of the world.’
5. Ponta do Sinó - Sal Island, Cabo Verde
Lastly, located in the northern group of the Cabo Verde Islands, just under 400 miles off the coast of western Africa, the island of Sal has an average of 350 days of sunshine per year. It is known for its seemingly unending stretches of white sand beaches, which are perfect for travelers who really want to get away from it all. The southernmost point of the island of Sal, Ponta do Sinó, is the ideal spot for a relaxing beach stroll along the clear, turquoise water.
