Day-By-Day Itinerary

Day 1:

Welcome to the Azores and Terceira

Upon arrival at Terceira International Airport, you'll be met by your driver and taken to your hotel in downtown Angra do Heroísmo. Spend the day exploring Angra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of three Azorean capital cities. In the evening, enjoy strolling the lilac-filled streets and find a local restaurant to try the island's signature dish, Alcatra.

Day 2:

Half-Day Algar do Carvão Tour

This afternoon, enjoy a small group tour to visit the famous Algar do Carvão, a rare lava tube - formations like this can only be seen in a handful of locations in the world.

Days 3-7:

Explore Terceira!

Spend your free days exploring Angra do Heroísmo and the island of Terceira! In Angra, we recommend a visit to the Duke of Terceira Garden. This garden is filled with many plant species gifted from around the world and emblematic of the Romantic period of Portuguese history. Next, stroll the Rua da Sé, which is considered the most traditional street on Terceira Island. It will lead you down past the cathedral to the western quarter of town and is lined with whitewashed houses, wrought iron balconies, bakeries, restaurants, and boutique artisan shops. Also, check out the Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo, the largest building in all the Azores. To learn more about the history of the Azores, consider a tour of the Palácio dos Capitães Generals. Built by the Jesuits at the end of the 16th century, this was the seat of the first unified government of the Azores. Or perhaps walk around nearby Monte Brasil which was turned into a natural reserve. Then get up close with the ruins of the Castle of São João Baptista and the large fort built at the end of the 16th century.

Elsewhere on the island, consider a visit to the city of Praia da Vitoria on the eastern coast of the island. Praia is Terceira's second largest city and features a cool city beach. You may also wish to visit Serra do Cume for a breathtaking view of the patchwork terrain of the island. Or take a dip in the natural swimming pools on the coast of Biscoitos.

There's also some great hiking trails where you can see the ancient lava flow up close. Ask your guide or the front desk for more information about these hikes.

Day 8:

Until Next Time

After breakfast, use the last of your time in Angra do Heroísmo to shop for souvenirs or simply relax at a café before your transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
