Alentejo Wine Region and Algarve Self-Drive Exploration

Beyond its historic and vibrant cities, Portugal also offers so much beauty in the countryside and along its expansive coastline. On this 8-day itinerary, explore the Alentejo wine region to the east of Lisbon, with its rolling hills, cork and olive trees, and vineyards. Then head south to the Algarve to enjoy the stunning coastline and amazing beaches.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1:

Welcome to Portugal

Upon arrival in Lisbon, you will meet your driver and head to your hotel in the heart of Lisbon. The rest of the day is yours to get settled.

Day 2:

Alentejo

After breakfast, pick up your rental car and travel to the east of the city to Evora, less than 2 hours from Lisbon. When you arrive into town, get settled into the hotel and then head out for a walk around. Évora has a history dating back more than five millennia! Be sure to visit the Roman Temple of Évora and the Chapel of Bones.

Day 3:

Free Day

Explore Evora and the Alentejo region at your own pace. We recommend visiting some wineries, the walled town of Monseraz, and Santarém, a natural viewpoint over the Tagus River.

Day 4:

Algarve

After breakfast, say farewell to the Alentejo region and drive south to Lagos in the Algarve, just under 3 hours. After checking-in at your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to start exploring this beautiful area. Hit the beach!

Day 5:

Free Day

Today is yours to enjoy the Algarve however you choose. Soak up the sun on a nearby beach or at the hotel pool, or head out to explore. We recommend a visit to the historic village of Silves. The castle is a must-see, as is the Silves Cathedral right next door. Continue to the Archeology Museum of Silves, full of historical pieces that tell the history of the region. Next, head to the mountains and stop at the hot springs of Caldas de Monchique. Continue to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve offering a breathtaking 360º view. On the way back to Lagos, stop at a winery for a tasting.

Day 6:

Free Day

Enjoy another free day in the Algarve region. We suggest a boat tour along the coastline towards Benagil Cave to soak up the wonders of this fascinating location. Visit the picturesque Marinha Beach as well as other scenic cliffs and caves.

Day 7:

Return to Lisbon

After breakfast, drive north to Lisbon and return your rental car before heading to your hotel in the city center for one last night in Portugal. Spend the late afternoon and evening exploring Lisbon on your own. Visit the bustling, hip neighborhoods of Bairro Alto and the Chiado, or stroll down Avenida Liberdade - one of the best high-end shopping areas in Europe.

Day 8:

Until Next Time

After breakfast, transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
