While not a well known destination to most American tourists, Madeira has been a favorite of Europeans for years thanks to its nearly perfect climate - its warmth in winter and slightly cooler summers make it an ideal place to visit any time of year. This 6-day itinerary gives you the time to explore the main island of Madeira, including the city of Funchal. Enjoy its rugged cliffs, magnificent shoreline, and delicious food. Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1:

Welcome to Madeira

Upon your arrival at Madeira International Airport, you’ll be met by a driver and brought to your hotel in Funchal center to drop your bags. The day is then yours to explore the charming city streets. Stroll down to the waterfront and relax at a cafe.

Day 2:

Full-Day Porto Moniz Tour

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel for a day-long tour of the northwestern side of the island. Enjoy the countryside off the beaten track in a 4x4 vehicle, taking in the forests and waterfalls. During the tour, you will have the opportunity to swim at the naturally-formed pools and sample local food and traditional drinks, including the "poncha". You will also visit Serra d'Água, Ginjas, Estanquinhos, Paúl da Serra, Fanal, Ribeira da Janela, Porto Moniz, Seixal and São Vicente.

Day 3:

Free Day in Funchal

Today is yours to explore however you would like. Sleep in, take a swim in the hotel pool, or stroll through Funchal. Visit Funchal Cathedral, ride the cable car, or explore some of the city’s beautiful botanical gardens.

Day 4:

Half-Day Food & Wine Walking Tour of Funchal

Dip into Madeira’s thriving culinary scene on this half-day wine and food tour of Funchal. Taste your way through Funchal’s restaurants and markets while learning about Madeira’s rich gastronomic history and admiring its distinctive ambiance. To top it off, sample local wines and mingle with friendly locals.

Day 5:

Half-Day Nuns Valley Tour

This half-day tour will take you to the central part of the island to experience the beauty of Nuns Valley. This area is surrounded by mountains and the sea. While visiting the village of Câmara de Lobos on the coast, you will have the opportunity to try some local drinks and traditional specialities.

Day 6:

Until Next Time

After breakfast, use the last of your time in Funchal to shop for souvenirs or simply relax at a café before your transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
