On this 8-day itinerary, explore the island of Terceira. Considered the cultural heart of the Azores, Terceira exemplifies the rich history, culture, art, and religion of the Azores Islands. The city of Angra do Heroísmo is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and will serve as your home base while you discover this beautiful island.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1:

Welcome to Terceira

Upon arrival at Terceira International airport, you'll be met by your driver and taken to your hotel in Angra do Heroísmo. Spend the rest of the day exploring Angra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of three Azorean capital cities. In the evening, enjoy strolling the lilac-filled streets and find a local restaurant to try the island's signature dish, Alcatra.

Day 2:

UNESCO Angra do Heroísmo walking tour

Enjoy a guided walking tour of the capital city of Angra do Heroísmo. Learn more about the traditional Azorean city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, named for its importance in the political, economic, and religious growth of the Azores archipelago. Visit the Duke of Terceira Garden a garden filled with many plant species gifted from around the world, emblematic of the Romantic period of Portuguese history. Check out the Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo, the largest building in the Azores featuring two bell towers.

Day 3:

Eastern Terceira/Serra do Cume

Today's tour begins at the fantastic viewpoint of the Serra do Cume, where one can see the fields divided in an authentic patchwork. The tour then continues to the north coast to discover the way volcanoes and the sea shaped the coastline into unique geological structures. There will also be time to explore the island's second largest city (Praia da Vitória) on foot before lunch at a local restaurant. In the afternoon, visit the viewpoint of the Facho to admire the whole city, then continue to the swimming pools of Porto Martins.

Day 4:

Western Terceira/Biscoitos Tour

This full-day tour starts with an ascent of Monte Brasil for a wonderful view of Angra and the bays. Heading north, you will see lava fields that have been cultivated into vineyards before continuing to Biscoitos, home to natural swimming pools. After lunch in a traditional restaurant, you will visit the island's wine museum. On the return to Angra do Heroísmo, you will visit the Algar do Carvão lava tube. This unique geologic feature can only be found in a few places in the world, including on Sao Miguel and Terceira.

Day 5:

Free Day

Today is yours to spend as you see fit. Relax at the hotel or head into town.

Day 6:

Whale and Dolphin Watch

Set out on a semi-rigid boat for a small group whale and dolphin watch to spot bottle nose dolphins, pilot whales, and as many as 21 other marine species that call these waters home. Visitors are practically guaranteed to spot marine life every day of the year!

Day 7:

Free Day

Your last full day on Terceira is yours to enjoy however you choose.

Day 8:

Until Next Time

After breakfast, you’ll have some time to shop for souvenirs or simply relax with the locals at an oceanfront café before your transfer back to the airport for your flight home.
