Discover Pico Island in the Azores

Red Windmill on Pico island in the Azores

Rising dramatically from the Atlantic Ocean, Pico Island is one of the most captivating destinations in the Azores, a nine-island archipelago belonging to Portugal. Known for its volcanic landscapes, rich wine culture, and rugged beauty, Pico offers travelers an authentic island experience. In Pico, lava fields meet the sea, vineyards grow in stone-walled plots, and Europe’s highest mountain pierces the clouds.

Whether you’re planning your first Azores adventure or returning to explore beyond São Miguel, Pico should absolutely be on your list.

Is Pico Island Worth It?

Absolutely. Pico Island is one of the most unique and visually striking islands in the Azores. While it’s less developed than São Miguel or Terceira, that’s precisely what makes it so special. Pico is quiet, authentic, and full of raw natural beauty. Visitors come here to hike Portugal’s highest peak, taste UNESCO-protected wines, and immerse themselves in traditional island life.

If you love nature, culture, and dramatic scenery, Pico is 100% worth the trip.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Pico?

The best time to visit Pico Island is during the primary travel season from April through October. During these months, the weather is mild and sunny, ferries and flights run frequently, and most tours, restaurants, and attractions are open.

This is the ideal season for hiking Mount Pico, whale watching, and exploring the vineyards of Criação Velha. While the island is beautiful year-round, winter months can be quiet, with limited tour availability and rougher seas.

When Did Pico Azores Last Erupt?

Pico Island’s volcanic history is what shaped its bold, black landscapes. The island is dominated by Mount Pico, an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1720. Today, it’s considered dormant but not extinct. You can even hike to its 2,351-meter (7,713 ft) summit. The hike is a challenging but unforgettable experience that rewards climbers with breathtaking views over the Azores archipelago.

How Many Days Do You Need in Pico?

If you’re staying nearby on Faial Island, Pico makes an excellent day trip by ferry. It’s only about a 30-minute crossing from Horta to Madalena, making it easy to explore Pico’s highlights in a single day with a guided tour.

For travelers with more time, a stay of up to 3 days is the ideal amount to explore Pico Island.

  • Day 1: Discover the wine region of Criação Velha and Madalena, and visit local wine cellars.
  • Day 2: Hike Mount Pico or or relax in the island’s natural swimming pools.
  • Day 3: Take a whale-watching tour, visit the whaling villages of Lajes do Pico and São Roque do Pico, and stop at scenic viewpoints along the coast.

Do You Need a Car in Pico?

Yes, renting a car is the best way to get around Pico Island. The island is spread out, public transportation is minimal, and most tours don’t run every day. Since there aren’t many hotels in the main towns, you’ll also need a car to reach restaurants and nearby attractions.

While escorted small-group tours are a great way to see the highlights, a rental car offers flexibility to explore Pico’s wineries, swimming holes, and lookout points at your own pace. For travelers who want independence and convenience, having your own vehicle is essential.

How Do You Get to Pico Island?

There are two main ways to reach Pico:

  1. By Air: You can fly to Pico Airport (PIX) from Lisbon or from other Azores islands such as São Miguel (Ponta Delgada) and Terceira.
  2. By Ferry: Regular ferries connect Pico with the nearby islands of Faial and São Jorge, making it easy to include Pico in a multi-island itinerary.

What Is Pico Island Known For?

Pico is best known for its volcanic peak, UNESCO World Heritage vineyards, and whaling history. Its landscape of black lava rock walls, called currais, was built to protect vines from ocean winds, and the resulting wines, especially the white Verdelho, are world-renowned.

The island was once a major whaling hub, but today, that legacy has transformed into responsible whale watching, making Pico one of the best places in the world to see sperm whales and dolphins.

What to Do in Pico Island

There’s no shortage of things to see and do on Pico. Here are some highlights:

  • Climb Mount Pico: Conquer Portugal’s highest mountain for an unforgettable sunrise or sunset view.
  • Visit the Wine Museum & Vineyards: Explore the unique volcanic vineyards of Criação Velha, a UNESCO site, and sample local Verdelho wines.
  • Go Whale Watching: Join a guided boat tour from Lajes do Pico for the chance to spot sperm whales, blue whales, and dolphins.
  • Discover Pico’s Whaling Heritage: Visit the Whaler’s Museum (Museu dos Baleeiros) in Lajes do Pico to learn about the island’s maritime past.
  • Relax by the Natural Swimming Pools: Cool off in volcanic tide pools in Madalena, São Roque, or Santo Amaro.
