The Palheiro Estate is a historic estate dating back to the early 19th century. Located just 15-minutes from Funchal city center, the Casa Velha do Palheiro is known for its elegant and traditional design, blending classic style with modern amenities. The original building was constructed as a hunting lodge built by the Conde de Carvalhal in 1804. The Historic building underwent a thorough restoration in 1997, and today it features a selection of 37 luxurious rooms and suites, each meticulously designed to provide the utmost comfort and relaxation. From elegant furnishings to plush bedding and modern amenities, every detail is crafted with the discerning traveler in mind. The spa is known for its tranquil setting and offers a range of massages, facials, and body treatments, using natural and organic products. The gardens contain a myriad of forest species growing alongside mature camellias and exotics. Many generations of the Blandy family have personally nurtured the gardens, developing them into the masterpiece of biodiversity they are today. The estate also provides a habitat for over twenty species of birds—some of them very rare. Both Macaronesian Sparrowhawks—of which there are just nine pairs, and Madeira Laurel Pigeons—a protected species native to Madeira—can be spotted nesting in the gardens' trees.
